Principal's Message - March 2009 |
|

Dear Parents~
March is upon us and as the old saying goes "In like a Lion out like a Lamb"! The school year is essentially half way over and insuring that learning continues to be our top priority really is a partnership between home and school. Our "lion" time of the year is upon us...we are in high gear, working kids hard and preparing them for upcoming state testing. In a few months, we'll be working to transition into late spring, end of the school year and summer.
Thank you in advance for the many of you who were able to make and maintain your student led conference appointments. The importance of students selecting work samples, reflecting on their personal strengths and weaknesses as a learner is an invaluable commitment to developing successful young people.
In order to graduate high school, students in the 12th grade must have a portfolio of work samples from their entire four years of high school, reflective examples from each year and a post-secondary plan for their future. Mr. Wolcott and I have had the opportunity to participate as community members in this process at Wa-Hi. As a leadership team, we've talked with principals, parents and students about this process and what we might do to insure our students are successful in this process. This is where STUDENT LED CONFERENCES come into play! As a part of our preparation for your scheduled time, teachers work to teach students how to select work, reflect on the qualities of work in their portfolio and talk to their parents about their work and goals for the future.
Change is difficult and sometimes communication not as clear as to why a change from the traditional Parent-Teacher model of years past may be warranted. The attendance at Parent-Teacher Conferences has dwindled in years past and we were looking to create an experience that had relevance to new standards, put kids first and was meaningful for families. As a result, this past Fall we had approximately 94% of our families at Garrison for scheduled conferences. We continue to strive for 100% of our students presenting their hard work and goal setting each conference time to a caring family member. This partnership shows our students that what they do all day is important and their personal goals to improve and be successful are as equally important!
Incidentally, your input matters. The computer lab was set up with an on-line survey to receive your feedback about this new format and an opportunity to give feedback as to how we might improve or maintain a quality program. If you were unable to give your feedback, please feel free to print out the hard copy in the Principal's Message section of our website and return it to the Garrison Office with your student.
Best Regards,
Mrs. Yonts
